ATLANTA (AP) – Georgia’s largest school district announced Tuesday that it won’t teach a new Advanced Placement course in African American Studies, saying the state Department of Education’s refusal to approve the course means its students would be cheated out of credit for the difficulty of the work.

The decision by the 183,000-student Gwinnett County district means political pressure on state Superintendent Richard Woods is unlikely to ease. Woods attempted to compromise last week by saying local districts could draw state money to teach the AP material by labeling it as a lower-level introductory course. That came a day after Woods said districts would have to teach the course using only local tax money.

“Withholding state approval for this AP course sends the message that the contributions and experiences of African Americans are not worthy of academic study at the same level as other approved AP courses,” Gwinnett County Superintendent Calvin Watts said in a statement.

A spokesperson for Woods didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment Tuesday evening.

The Atlanta, DeKalb County and Cobb County school districts have all said they are offering the course in some high schools. But Gwinnett County is maybe the most influential district in the state, with others often following the lead of a system that contains more than a tenth of all Georgia public school students.

Woods has faced a rally where Democrats attacked the elected Republican, as well as pointed questions from Gov. Brian Kemp. The Republican Kemp sent a letter asking why and how Woods arrived at his original decision to block state funding. Woods responded to Kemp Thursday, but still hasn’t fully explained his objections.

“My primary concern and consideration was whether it was more appropriate to adopt the AP course in its 440-page totality at the state level, or to use the existing African American Studies course code and keep the review, approval, adoption, and delivery of this curriculum closer to local students, educators, parents, and boards,” Woods wrote to Kemp.

All other AP courses are listed in the state catalog, state Department of Education spokesperson Meghan Frick said last week.

If districts teach the course under the introductory code, students won’t get the extra credit that an AP course carries when the Georgia Student Finance Commission calculates grades to determine whether a student is eligible for Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship. It also won’t count as a rigorous course. A student who keeps a B average in high school (view it) and takes at least four rigorous courses earns a full tuition scholarship to any Georgia public college or university.

“Gwinnett is working tirelessly to do right by their students,” state Rep. Jasmine Clark, a Lilburn Democrat who is Black and helped spearhead pushback against Woods. “As a parent of GCPS student, all I want for my child is to have the same opportunities as students taking other AP courses, should she choose to want to learn more about the contributions of her ancestors in a rigorous, college-level course.”

The Advanced Placement course drew national scrutiny in 2023 when Florida´s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, preparing for his presidential run, said he would ban the course in his state because it pushed a political agenda. In June, South Carolina officials also refused to approve the course. South Carolina said individual districts could still offer it.

In Arkansas, state officials have said the course will count for credit in the coming school year. They denied such credit last year, but six schools taught the pilot course anyway.

Some individual districts around the country have also rejected the course.

In 2022, Georgia lawmakers passed a ban on teaching divisive racial concepts in schools, prohibiting claims that the U.S. is “fundamentally or systematically racist,” and mandating that no student “should feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress because of his or her race.”

So far, 18 states have passed such bans. It is unclear if Georgia´s law influenced Woods´ decision.

The College Board, a nonprofit testing entity, offers Advanced Placement courses across the academic spectrum. The courses are optional and taught at a college level. Students who score well on a final exam can usually earn college credit.

The College Board said 33 Georgia schools piloted the African American Studies course in the 2023-2024 academic year.

Epsom College’s headteacher and her seven-year-old daughter were unlawfully killed by her husband during a shotgun rampage before he turned the weapon on himself, a coroner has ruled.  

Emma Pattison and daughter Lettie, seven, were found dead at their home within the grounds of the exclusive £42,000-a-year boarding school in Surrey in February last year, alongside the body of George Pattison.

An inquest was previously told Mrs Pattison, 45, died of shotgun wounds to the chest and abdomen on February 5 2023, while little Lettie was shot in the head.

Both are believed to have been murdered by 39-year-old chartered accountant Mr Pattison, before he killed himself with the double-barrelled firearm. 

Richard Travers, Senior Coroner for Surrey,  today concluded that Emma and Lettie were unlawfully killed, having been shot by Pattison. He also concluded that Pattison died by suicide and intended the act.

The news came as the court heard how a worried Mrs Pattinson had told her sister her killed husband had hit her hours before he slaughter the respected educator and her daughter.

Evidence from Deborah Kirk, the sister of Mrs Pattison, was read to the inquest at Surrey Coroner’s Court in Woking on Tuesday.

She said she received a phone call from her sister just before 11pm on February 4, telling her that her husband had hit her and their dog, Bella.

She said her sister told her: ‘I need someone to come over.’

Her sister’s tone of voice was one of ‘concern, but not of terror’.

‘It was more like she had assessed the situation and did not feel safe,’ she said.

‘I kept trying to call Emma but there was still no answer,’ she said.

She added: ‘By the time we had arrived at Emma’s house I was getting really worried that she was not answering her phone.’

When they arrived at the house, all of the lights were on and the cars were in the driveway.

Her husband entered the house ahead of her, and then stopped her from coming in any further once she entered.

‘He said don’t go in there, don’t go in there, we are going outside,’ she said.

Following their deaths, heartbroken family said they believed Emma and Lettie would remain as inseparable in death as they were in life

Her husband called an ambulance, and paramedics arrived on the scene shortly afterwards.

Ms Kirk also read out a tribute to her sister and niece at the inquest.

‘Emma was lightness itself,’ she said.

She said her sister was ‘smart’ and kind in a way that ‘fills a room’ and ‘drives change’.

She described her niece, chung chi (https://lambangcapgiarenhat.com) Lettie, as ‘razor smart, curious, and disarmingly cute.’

She said she would comfort her niece whenever she was sad.

‘I would hold her in my arms and say, yes it is hard to be seven, isn’t it monkey?’ she said.

Ms Kirk said she was still trying to forgive Mr Pattison.

‘I can only speak for myself when I say that I am trying to forgive you,’ she said.

She added: ‘I can only imagine that you were in an extraordinary hell of your own.’

The inquest heard that Mrs Pattison watched rugby with her friends in the hours before she died.

The last friend left at 7pm, and Mrs Pattison then received a Chinese takeaway at 9.36pm.

In evidence read out to the court by the coroner, the delivery driver said: ‘She had a smiley face and seemed okay.’

The inquest heard that a post-mortem report found that Mr Pattison’s cause of death was a shotgun wound.

It also found that Mrs Pattison and Lettie’s causes of death were shotgun wounds.

A toxicology report found that George had 243 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, a quantity that is associated with a ‘high to extreme’ level of intoxication.

A statement released by Mrs Pattison and Lettie’s family after their deaths said:  ‘To see the esteem in which Emma is held by all who knew her is an enormous comfort. 

‘She was everything one could hope for in a daughter, sister, mother, wife, friend, teacher and so much more. 

‘We are an extremely close family and family was at the centre of Emma and Lettie’s universe.

‘The Epsom College community had become part of that universe for them both. 

‘Seven-year-old Lettie was Emma’s pride and joy – an adorable, vibrant little girl with a compelling curiosity, a heart-melting smile and an intellect beyond her years. 

‘The two of them were inseparable and we take comfort in that they will remain so.’

For example, a senior of Albany high school today is faced with many of the same challenges as a senior of 20 years ago. Does he or she prepare for more education through college? Do economic hardships create a need for seeking employment? Is there familial support to consider? Is a trip around the world or to destinations unknown going to extract a much broader meaning and appreciation of life?

For each person that these questions are asked of, the answers will surely be as varied as the individuals being asked. There are steps that can be taken throughout the duration of high school to help prepare for life after walking across the stage. Not to harp on those who do not like to study, or feel like they just are destined to follow with their parent’s career choice – Take your course work seriously. Grade Point Average plays a more important part in the future than we would like to acknowledge. Who ever said grades aren’t everything missed the boat. Poor or average grades affect how people perceive us, and what kind of funding we are entitled to when nearing time to enter college.

Make the most of high school years by participating in school activities like student government, yearbook, or newspaper clubs. Taking advantage of as many extra-curricular activities as possible helps to create a well-rounded personality. Disregard all the hype and criticisms of peers and pursue activities with a fervent drive. The more varied the activity, the better chance of deciding a career direction.

There are many companies that offer internships for students. This is another great way to explore career opportunities. Life is about seizing opportunity when it presents itself. Not many know what they want to be when they grow up. Branching out into the community through volunteering or working an internship can open doors to future interests.

If it is available, a foreign exchange program is an excellent way to broaden horizons. It presents an opportunity to learn a new culture, a new language, and friends around the globe. These experiences will leave a lasting impression.

No matter how life comes at you, take time to explore. Timing is everything – being in the right place at the right time and seizing every chance that can improve daily living is how to achieve the success wanted. It may sound a little cliche, but pursuing a dream, even when no one else believes, is how we become who we are. When we give up on our dreams it is then that we forget to live.
