Suicides among preteens have DOUBLED in past 20 years

Rates of suicide among elementary school-age children have nearly doubled in the past 20 years , according to new research.

Researchers examined death records for US preteens aged eight to 12 from January 1, 2001, through December 31, 2022.

They found that the rate rose from about 3.3 per 1million deaths in 2001 to more than nine per 1million in 2021, an increase of more than 170 percent.

Research suggests that a protracted, worsening mental health crisis among young people is leading to rises in suicides. The crisis has resulted in record high rates of hopelessness, depression, and anxiety.

Using exisiting death record data, researchers found that rates of suicides per one million have increased by a rate of 1.7 per million over the past two decades

Researchers did not say explicitly why the rates of suicide among children is rising, but it coincides with a worsening mental health crisis in young people

The overall number of suicide deaths is still low. A total of 2,241 preteens died by suicide from 2001 to 2022.

About 68 percent of them were boys age eight to 12.

Still, it means today that suicide is now the fifth most common way for an eight-to-12-year-old to die. Back in 2001, it wasn’t even in the top 10.

According to the latest research, hanging or suffocation was the predominant method of suicide for the two-decade period, but the largest increase in preteen suicides was by firearm.

Researchers said: ‘This study provides a foundation for future research to explore unique factors associated with preteen suicide.’

Their findings were published in the journal JAMA Network Open.

Meanwhile, figures show the percentage of those who have contemplated or attempted suicide is at an all-time-high.

Sixteen percent of young people contemplated suicide in 2011. That rose to 22 percent in 2021. And in 2011, eight percent attempted suicide. In 2021, 10 percent attempted.

Black preteens had the highest rates of suicide for both periods, whereas Hispanic preteens had the highest percentage increase.

Researchers said: ‘These findings highlight a need to better understand suicide risk among racial and chung chi (please click the next webpage) ethnic subgroups, including multiracial individuals who comprise the fastest-growing racial group in the US.’

America’s child mental health crisis UNCOVERED: 90% of school administrators describe serious problems in schools, as more kids fight anxiety, depression and suicide, nationwide survey warns

While the researchers did not offer an explanation, government tracking has consistently shown a worsening mental health crisis over the past two decades.

The sharpest increase in suicide rates coincided with the Covid pandemic, when millions were forced to forego social activities and time with friends, suffer disruptions to mental health care, and be confined to their homes.

At the same time, federal researchers in a previous report have said, ‘As we saw in the 10 years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health among students overall continues to worsen.’

Experts from across the medical and academic spectrum have posited that various aspects of modern life have set young people up for mental distress.

An increasingly sedentary population with poor dietary habits feeds into feelings of depression and inadequacy. Research has shown that children who played sports were a fifth less likely to suffer depression compared to those who were not sporty. Being active is also tied to lower rates of anxiety.

Poor sleep quality also impairs people’s mental health. Sleep research suggests that a teenager needs between eight and 10 hours of sleep every night, yet most teenagers only get about 6.5-7.5 hours sleep per night.

Children are also more tied than ever to screens and social media. Government researchers have found that children and adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of mental health problems, including experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

When asked about the impact of social media on their body image, 46 percent of adolescents aged 13-17 said social media makes them feel worse.

Jono Castano dines with his friend after split from Simone Holtznagel

Jono Castano was supported by his close friend as they headed out for dinner at a lavish restaurant just hours after news of his split from Simone Holtznagel emerged.

The celebrity personal trainer, 33, chung chi (click the following internet site) confirmed to Daily Mail Australia on Tuesday that he and Simone, 31, had broken up, nine weeks after they officially parted ways.

Just hours later, he gave an insight into how he was getting through his heartbreak as he headed out for dinner at a luxury restaurant with a close friend that evening.

Jono took to his Instagram Stories to share a gallery of snaps from his evening out at the upmarket Parisian brasserie Armorica in Sydney with his friend Edin Zecevic.

The friends enjoyed a bottle of wine and a delicious meal of steak frites as Jono was supported through the difficult time.

He also proved he remains on good terms with his model ex Simone as he tagged her in a separate post on Wednesday morning, just hours after confirming their split.

The Acero gym owner shared an adorable photograph of their baby daughter Gia, three months, fast asleep as he doted over the little one.

In a caption, he tagged Simone as he penned: ‘Our little g @simoneholtznagel [love heart hands emoji.’

On Tuesday, Jono gave an insight into how he was getting through his heartbreak as he headed out for dinner at a luxury restaurant with a close friend Edin Zecevic

Simone did not re-share the picture to her own Instagram Stories and she has not yet publicly commented on their break-up.

On Tuesday, Jono confirmed that he and Simone decided to go their separate ways nine weeks ago, around the end of May.

Simone is currently staying with her family in Wollongong, while Jono remains in Sydney running his gym Acero, which he co-founded with his ex-wife Amy.

Jono exclusively told Daily Mail Australia of the split: ‘We just decided it was best for her to spend time with her family in Wollongong.

‘Who knows what the future holds our idea is just to be the best parents for Gia at this stage.’

The couple’s separation came around nine weeks after they welcomed their first child into the world on Easter Sunday.

Simone and Jono are believed to still be on amicable terms and are focusing on co-parenting their beloved daughter.

News of their split came just hours after Simone posted a cryptic quote about ‘moving forward’ and being ‘patient’ for a ‘long time’ on her Instagram Stories.

On Monday night, Simone posted a thinly-veiled message about prioritising her own happiness to Instagram in what appeared to be a reference to their separation.

Jono took to his Instagram Stories to share a gallery of snaps from his evening out at the upmarket Parisian brasserie Armorica in Sydney with Edin

He also proved he remains on good terms with his model ex Simone as he tagged her in an adorable photograph of their baby daughter Gia, three month, on Wednesday morning

The quote read: ‘You shouldn’t feel guilty for moving forward if you’ve given someone multiple opportunities to improve or change, but they didn’t.

‘Everyone has limits, and it’s important to look out for your own well-being. If you tried to help or waited for them to change their behaviour, but things stayed the same, it’s okay to choose what’s best for you and move on.

‘Prioritising your own happiness and peace is essential, especially when you’ve been patient and understanding for a long time.’

Simone last shared an Instagram post featuring Jono on April 28, where she gave fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse at their first family photoshoot with baby Gia.

News of the split emerged just days after they both returned from a trip to Tasmania with Jono’s ex Amy and her new partner Aaron Evans.

Despite separating nine weeks ago, the couple proved they are still on good terms as they jetted off on an intimate family getaway together.

They were also spotted at the airport taking baby Gia on her first ever flight.

Amy shared several photos and videos from their stay at the luxury Leighton House in rural Tasmania, which costs $1,600 for a minimum two-night stay.

In the posts, Simone and Jono were seen doting over Gia and cooking together in the kitchen as they enjoyed some quality time with Amy and Aaron.

The couple first started dating back in 2022, months after Jono confirmed his split from his longtime partner Amy.

Celebrity personal trainers Jono and Amy were high school sweethearts, but divorced in 2021 after 15 years together.

Simone confirmed she and Jono were expecting their first child together in October last year, and welcomed Gia into the world on Easter Sunday, March 31.

Confirming their daughter’s birth on Instagram, Simone shared pictures of her and Jono cuddling up to the little one in hospital.

She wrote in a caption at the time: ‘We are totally and completely in love with her and enjoying these special moments as a family of three.’

Before welcoming their daughter, Simone had told how she and Jono had always planned to have children.

‘Kids have always been in our plan. We started talking about it more and more and then it just happened,’ she told Who magazine after falling pregnant with Gia.

FBI finds social media account linked to Trump shooter Thomas Crooks

The FBI revealed they found a social media account possibly tied to Trump shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks that could shine light on the motive behind his assassination attempt.

So far very little has been uncovered about Crooks and what led to his shooting of Trump, which injured others and fatally wounded former firefighter Corey Comperatore on July 13.

The bombshell developments in the investigation into the assassination attempt at Trump’s Butler, Pennsylvania, rally came during a Senate hearing Tuesday.

Congress dragged in the Secret Service’s new acting head Ronald Rowe and the number two at the FBI, Deputy Director Paul Abbate, to testify on the shooting.

Abbate revealed that at least one social media account on an unnamed platform believed to be associated with Crooks was discovered by the FBI. That account posted over 700 comments between 2019 and 2020, he added.

‘Some of these comments … appear to reflect anti-Semitic and anti-immigration themes to espouse political violence,’ Abbate said.

Acting Director of the U.S. Secret Service, Ronald L. Rowe, Jr. and Deputy Director of the FBI Paul Abbate are sworn-in before a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the attempted assassination of Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump, on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., July 30, 2024

BREAKING NEWS

Acting Secret Service director says he’s ‘ashamed’ gunman was able to get on the Trump rally roof

He wouldn’t confirm the name of the social media platform until after his agents could prove with 100% certainty Crooks made the posts.

Abbate said the posts were ‘extreme in nature,’ but that the FBI is still determining whether the account actually belonged to Crooks.

He also disclosed that the agency is still working to identify and infiltrate Crooks’s various ‘encrypted’ accounts that could shine light on his motive.

That angered Sen. Lindsey Graham who wanted more information on his. motive.

‘So you’re telling me, the guy that took eight shots at the president, former president, has apps that we can’t get into, that may if you could get into [them] reveal some relevant information.’

‘That is correct, senator,’ the officials responded.

This concerned Graham who later pushed for better methods to infiltrate encrypted accounts.

‘We need a solution that provides lawful access,’ the officials noted, inferring current options only provide illegal entry into Crooks’s suspected accounts.

In addition to the online account discoveries, the number two man at the FBI disclosed more about the timeline behind the assassination attempt.

‘Approximately 25 minutes prior to the shooting, the U.S. Secret Service command post was notified of a suspicious person,’ Abbate testified.

The Secret Service acting director also admitted he had no defense as for why the rooftop where Crooks fired shots toward former President Trump was left open.

‘I went to the roof of the AGR building where the assailant fired shots, and I laid in a prone position to evaluate his line of sight.’

‘What I saw made me ashamed as a career law enforcement officer and a 25 year veteran with the Secret Service. I cannot defend why that roof was not better secured,’ he told Congress on Tuesday.

Crooks fired eight rounds toward Trump, grazing him with a bullet in his ear.

‘When I laid in that position I could not, will not understand why there was not better coverage or at least somebody looking at that roof line when that’s where they were posted,’ Rowe said, noting that Crooks’ head would have been clearly visible from the unmanned rooftop.

Thirty seconds before Crooks fired his shots, local law enforcement had radioed to Secret Service warning about a man with a rifle on the roof. Around three and a half minutes before that, he’d been ‘observed on the roof.’

Former Secret Service Director chung chi – lambangcapgiarenhat.com – Kimberly Cheatle appears before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing on oversight of the Secret Service on July 23, 2024. She resigned the day after the hearing

Rowe said that since the shooting he’d implemented a number of changes at the Secret Service, including having security plans go through multiple supervisors before implementation, expanded use of drones, more resources for protective site communications and ‘expeditious’ approval of requests for personnel at protective sites with heightened security environments.

Rowe and Abbate spoke to the Judiciary and Homeland Security committees after their boss, former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle submitted her resignation last week after a six-hour-long hearing where Republicans and Democrats accused her of stonewalling.

The FBI and Secret Service officials also disclosed a more accurate timeline of events leading up to the shooting.

Almost a week before the rally, Crooks scouted the site of the event, spending 20 minutes doing reconnaissance on the location, they shared.

Just a day before the shooting Crooks went to a shooting range to practice his shot.

The morning of the July 13 rally, Crooks again visited the grounds, the officials said.

Abbate and Rowe also disclosed Crooks’s activity on the day of the shooting and what authorities did in response.

Local law enforcement marked Crooks as ‘suspicious’ 90 minutes before he opened fire, the officials shared.

Secret Service was informed that the would-be assassin had a range finder 30 minutes before the shooting occurred.

Minutes later, just 20 before the shooting, the Secret Service counter sniper team was given a photo of the ‘suspicious suspect.’

Then, 3.5 minutes before Crooks opened fire, he was spotted on the roof.

The officials also disclosed that Crooks was seen with a gun on the roof 30 seconds before firing his first shot.

‘Within 15.5 seconds of his first shot, he’s neutralized,’ Rowe testified about how quickly Crooks was killed after opening fire.

Deputy Director of the FBI Paul Abbate testified that the agency is still working to crack encrypted online accounts related to Crooks

But prior to his first shot Secret Service was unaware of his location, the Secret Service acting chief added.

He noted that the counter snipers did not see him because he was initially hiding on the other side of the roof.

‘I believe he was obscured by that roof,’ Rowe testified.

Harris indicates she is getting closer to naming her running mate

Kamala Harris will tour battleground states next week with her vice presidential candidate, in a sign she is ready to make a decision about who it will be.

The plan, as reported by Reuters, indicates that Harris will name her running mate for the Democratic presidential ticket by this weekend.

The short list of candidates under consideration include Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.

Several of the contenders were out campaigning for her this weekend in battleground states in what many saw as tryouts for the vice presidential slot.

The list has also narrowed as North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper took himself out of the running on Monday, saying ‘this just wasn’t the right time for North Carolina and for me to potentially be on a national ticket.’

Kamala Harris will tour battleground states next week with her vice presidential candidate

Harris, 59, has been the focus of Democratic attention since President Joe Biden announced on July 21 that he was dropping out of the 2024 campaign.

She quickly took over Biden’s campaign infrastructure and seamlessly transitioned to the de facto 2024 Democratic candidate last week when she earned enough support from delegates to win the nomination.

She is now searching for her vice presidential candidate, focusing on mostly men with executive experience from swing states in order to round out the ticket.

Her search is ongoing and her teams of lawyers and political aides are still reviewing information.

Kamala Harris taps failed candidate for governor Stacey Abrams to help her win Georgia

Harris is having personal conversations with the finalists.

If Harris wins the White House in November, she would be the first woman, first Black woman and first person of South Asian descent to serve as president.

Given that, many Democrats have argued she should balance her ticket both demographically and politically with her VP pick.

Several of the contenders have been on the trail for her already.

Shapiro and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmore were in Pennsylvania for her over the weekend although Whitmore has taken herself out of the running for vice presdient.

Meanwhile, Beshear was in Georgia on Sunday. And Buttigieg has been all over the cable news, touting Harris’ credentials.

There are reports Harris has narrowed down her choices to Shaprio, Kelly, Beshear and Walz. All four men would be a balance on the ticket.

Kelly hails from the swing state of Arizona and Shapiro from the swing state of Pennsylvania. Republicans are making a play for Walz’s state of Minnesota. And Beshear hails from Kentucky, making him the rare Democrat to win a statewide race in that red state.

All four men would also help appeal to working-class, white, rural voters who have drifted away from the party. Joe Biden was able to win many of them over, helping him take the White House in 2020.

Here’s a closer look at the contenders:

GOVERNOR JOSH SHAPIRO OF PENNSYLVANIA

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro

Shapiro, 51, is among the most popular U.S. governors, winning his 2022 election in a rout over a Trump-endorsed Republican.

He’s an outspoken supporter of abortion rights who has won three statewide elections in Pennsylvania. His speaking style draws comparisons to former President Barack Obama.

As attorney general, he rooted out abuse in the Catholic Church.

But he has taken flak from the left for his support for Israel’s war on Hamas, a private school voucher program and natural gas infrastructure.

His allies argue that he would help Harris win Pennsylvania, which is part of the Democrats’ ‘blue wall’ of midwest states to keep Trump out of the White House.

However, if he’s picked he will likely have to answer allegations about one of his  top aides and closest allies, Mike Vereb, who stepped down amid a sexual harassment investigation.

KENTUCKY GOVERNOR ANDY BESHEAR

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear

Beshear, 46, stands out in a heavily Republican state.

During his weekend stop in Georgia for Harris, he talked of winning votes in ‘tough counties’ but emphasized liberal bona fides: ‘I am a proud pro-union governor. I am a proud pro-choice governor. I am a proud public education governor. I am a proud pro-diversity governor.’

There have been qustions about Beshear’s stance on abortion rights, which is he is pushing to clarify. He picked the self-described ‘personally pro-life’ Democrat, Jacqueline Coleman, to be his lieutenant governor.

Closest in age to JD Vance among the Democrats’ possibilities, Beshear openly mocks Trump’s understudy for presenting himself as a son of Appalachia. ‘I mean, there’s a county that JD Vance says he’s from in Kentucky – and chung chi; visit this web-site, I won it by 22 points last November,’ he said.

MINNESOTA GOVERNOR TIM WALZ

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz

Walz, 60, is a favorite of some progressives.

He brings an atypical national political resume: He was a non-commissioned Army officer, public school teacher and state high school championship football coach before entering politics.

Before being elected governor, he was one of the last white Democrats in Congress to represent a mostly rural, small-town House district. He spent 12 years on Capitol Hill.

He’s a notable step away from Harris, who hails from the liberal city of San Francisco, which many Democrats argue bodes well for the ticket.

His supporters argue he is best positioned to bring rural white males and union workers to the Democratic ticket.

SENATOR MARK KELLY OF ARIZONA

Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona

Kelly, 60, is the only top contender in Congress.

He boasts an impressive military resume and experience as an astronaut.

He has strong Latino support locally and solid relationships with Arizona officials along the U.S.-Mexico border. That balance could give him credibility on immigration policy as Republicans frame high numbers of migrant border crossings as a national crisis.

But Kelly has had to shore up his credentials with labor, a key Democratic faction.

Kelly changed his position on union-backed legislation known as the PRO Act, which would make it easier to organize workers. He was one of just a handful of Democrats who didn’t co-sponsor the bill, saying at the time he supported the goals but had concerns. Following opposition from labor leaders, Kelly said this month he would vote for the bill if it came up for a vote.

His wife, Gabby Giffords, was a former member of Congress who was shot in her district in 2011. Her recovery was a national celebration.
